Priority tree opportunity index

Overview

This layer shows the priority tree opportunity index and can help answer the question: Where is it possible to plant trees in places that also have high ground level temperatures and high amenity density (a proxy for pedestrian activity)?

The index assigns equal weight to three components: hazard, exposure, and opportunity. Hazard is assessed as land surface temperature. Exposure is assessed as amenity density. Adaptive capacity is assessed as tree opportunity.

Function
To help answer the question: Where is it possible to plant trees in places that also have high ground level temperatures and high amenity density (a proxy for pedestrian activity)?

Cautions
This index uses land surface temperature which, while widely avilable, is a poor proxy for the heat hazard experienced by people. If available for the full area of interest at sufficient resolution, consider using a heat hazard metric more directly correlated with human health, such as air temperature or universal thermal climate index.  Amenity data is from OpenStreetMap, a crowdsourced dataset, and is subject to error due to contributor error, gaps in coverage, and outdated data.
