Plantable areas

Overview

This layer shows areas where street trees can potentially be planted. Plantable areas are defined as a subset of pedestrian areas that are not within 5 m of buildings or 9 m of intersections and that do not already contain tree canopy. These constraints approximate practical limitations for planting street trees.

Function
To estimate realistic locations where additional street trees could be planted.

Cautions
Modeled plantable area data is only as strong as its supporting layers. Our input datasets might not be completely accurate in terms of the location and height of urban features like buildings and trees. The plantable area data is suitable for guiding assessments of heat and the potential for creating interventions, but is not intended to serve as a tool for designing tree planting programs.
