Tree cover

Overview

Percent of tree cover (with height more than 3 meter) per 100m pixel based on the Global Tree Canopy height Dataset (Meta and WRI). The source data is a product of automated analysis of satellite imagery and lidar data.

Function
To identify where tree canopy, with its cooling benefits due to transpiration and shade, is present or lacking.

Cautions
Modeled tree scenarios are hypothetical and only represent one possible outcome. Addtionally, the data is only as strong as its supporting layers. While our input datasets are robust, they are not completely accurate in terms of the placement and height of urban features like buildings and trees. The scenarios are suitable for guiding assessments of heat and the potential for creating interventions, but are not intended to serve as a tool for designing tree planting programs.
